After graduating from Guntur Medical College (GMC), India, Vijay went on to obtain her diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay. After a year of private practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology in India, she made her home in Chicago eventually becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States. She completed her post-graduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, IL and received her permanent board certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1984. Vijay has been in private practice in Lincoln Park area of Chicago since 1979. She was elected as a fellow of the American College of Gynecology and Obstetricians (ACOG) and the Chicago Gynecological Society. She is recognized with a biographic profile in Who's Who  in America®, Who's Who in American Women®
